Access changes what students get the chance to discover.

We're honest about where we are. 50+ students taught. International chapters. A vision much bigger than our current scale.

The Stories

East Palo Alto: a student who never heard of debate.

In East Palo Alto, Take the Mic worked with a student who was a strong speaker. Confident. Articulate. The kind of person you'd pick out of a room and say, "they should be doing debate."

But they had never heard of speech and debate before. Not because they lacked ability. Because the opportunity had simply never made it to them.

This story represents the larger problem: there are students who already have the ability and potential to thrive in speech and debate, but they may never discover the activity because it's not available or accessible to them.

The Why

We've worked with students who had little or no previous exposure.

Take the Mic has worked with students through libraries and community organizations. We've developed speech and debate programming specifically for students who had little or no previous exposure to the activity.

We don't just teach students who already know about debate. We reach students who might never have discovered it on their own.

The Goal

5,000 students by April 2029.

We've reached 50+ students so far. We know that's small compared to the goal. But every student we reach is someone who might never have had the chance otherwise. The vision is much bigger than where we are today — and we're building toward it.
